Barcelona Best Placed To Sign Ilkay Gundogan On A Free Transfer

A recent report from DEPREDICT has offered an important update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Manchester City’s star players including Ilkay Gundogan.

With the midfielder’s contract expiring at the end of the season, it appears Barcelona are best-placed to secure his services in the summer. This is because of many factors, including the club’s healthy relationship with Gundogan.

Mateu Alemany had earlier confirmed he had a meeting with Gundogan’s uncle, who also serves as the German’s agent. They have a good relationship.

Barcelona also have a strong relationship with Manchester City. The two entities have been involved in various deals in recent times including the sales of Ferran Torres and Eric Garcia. Barça are looking for a similar deal for Gundogan.

The former Borussia Dortmund superstar is indeed facing an uncertain future at Etihad. Man City coach Pep Guardiola has made it clear that he will not prevent any player from leaving the club, as evident in the loan exit of Joao Cancelo during the January transfer window.

The same applies to Gundogan, who has featured in almost 300 competitive matches for Manchester City during his six-and-a-half-year spell at the club. His contributions have been critical in helping the club secure four Premier League titles, among other accolades.

Barcelona, therefore, are in prime position to secure the services of the German international as they look to reinforce their options in the middle of the park.

The Blaugrana, after all, are risking the loss of Sergio Busquets, whose contract expires at the end of the season. They have not had much luck with the signing of Franck Kessie either, with the Ivorian recently emerging as a target for Premier League duo Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The potential addition of Gundogan, therefore, could go a long way in strengthening Barcelona’s ranks in the middle of the park next season.
