Barcelona Interested In The Loan Signing Of Julian Alvarez, But Move Complicated

On Sunday, reports emerged that Barcelona had probed the possibility of signing Manchester City starlet Julian Alvarez, who could be allowed to leave the club on loan in the summer.

Building on that, Joan Fontes has reported that Barcelona, indeed, hold an interest in signing the 23-year-old Argentine forward on loan in the upcoming transfer window. However, the move is likely to be complicated to pull off.

Alvarez signed for Man City in January last year, although he moved to the club from River Plate only in the summer. He has since made a solid impression in the handful of chances he has received from Pep Guardiola.

Alvarez also played an important role in Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2022 triumph in Qatar in December.

However, his role at the Etihad Stadium remains that of a squad player as Erling Haaland is the undisputed starter in the No. 9 role under Guardiola.

Hence, there is a possibility of Alvarez, whose contract runs until the summer of 2027, leaving Manchester City on loan in the summer. And Barça are attentive to the situation and would be interested in signing the 23-year-old on a temporary deal.

However, Joan Fontes adds that the deal will be complicated for the Blaugrana to pull off. But the club are interested in improving the roster for the next season.

Barça officials met with the Manchester City counterparts recently to discuss another of their player, in Ilkay Gundogan. Whether the topic of Alvarez was broached during those talks has not been made clear.

But, it seems like the La Liga leaders have some degree of interest in the Argentine, who could leave the Etihad on loan.
