EMOTIONAL BREAKAWAY WIN FOR GIULIO CICCONE AS GC FAVOURITES TAKE IT EASY AT GIRO D’ITALIA ON STAGE 15.

After the fireworks on Saturday, it was a far more relaxed outing on Stage 15 as the breakaway was allowed to stay clear. Giulio Ciccone ended his three-year wait for a third stage win at the Giro d’Italia after proving by far the strongest rider from a huge breakaway group. Richard Carapaz maintained his seven-second lead over Jai Hindley in the general classification ahead of the final rest day.

Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) claimed his first win at the Giro d’Italia since 2019 as he soloed clear on Stage 15 to deliver more home joy at the Italian Grand Tour.

Ciccone was overcome with emotion after crossing the finish line, with the 27-year-old over a minute-and-a-half ahead of his closest challenger Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious).

Sunday’s profile promised excitement in the second half with three tasty categorised climbs on the menu but after the fireworks 24 hours previous, the GC heavyweights were content to take it easy ahead of the final rest day.

That allowed a 27-strong breakaway to get away before the first climb of the day. That group was slowly whittled down before Ciccone attacked with 22km remaining, with only Buitrago and Hugh Carthy (EF Education–EasyPost) able to go with him. Soon they were distanced too.

Ciccone quickly opened up a big lead as he ripped away to take his first victory since before the Covid pandemic.
