Gerard Romero: Lionel Messi Returning To Barcelona Very Difficult But Not Impossible

Lionel Messi has continued to be a hot topic in Barcelona even 18 months after his departure from Camp Nou. He has been subjected to a return to Catalonia in the coming summer, and the speculations have been exacerbated following the attacker’s supposed visit to Barcelona recently.

It was widely believed that the Argentine wanted to continue at Paris Saint-Germain, especially after an excellent start to the season. But it appears he is having a change of heart recently, and with PSG recently losing to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, he might seriously consider a move elsewhere.

Although PSG are not out of the competition just yet, it is certain that Messi may rethink his future if the French giants get eliminated by Bayern in the Round of 16 stage.

To that end, Gerard Romero has offered an update on Messi’s situation, suggesting that the Argentine’s return to Barcelona is considered a very difficult proposition, but it is not an impossible task, as far as the Catalans are concerned.

There is indeed an economic crisis going on at Camp Nou, with the club needing to reduce a whopping €200 million from their squad salary budget in order to avoid the sanctions of the Financial Fair Play rules in La Liga.

Barça have been trying to balance the books by finding new sponsorships while the sale of star players such as Jordi Alba and Ansu Fati may also be considered. But if they are to bring in Messi, the Blaugrana may have to make substantial financial provisions for the team.

This would mean the departure of multiple star players and the exit of veteran Sergio Busquets and even Alba.

However, it must be noted that Messi could fancy a return to Barcelona if he does ever leave PSG in the coming summer. This is because the attacker is coming on the back of World Cup success and might want to play at the highest level for at least a few more years, before jumping to a lower tier league such as the MLS.
