Home favourite Denise Herrmann-Wick held off a charging field to claim 7.5km sprint gold at the World Biathlon Championships in Oberhof.

The 2022 Olympic 15km individual champion charged to victory in the closing stages in a time of 21:19.7, with Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg just 2.2 seconds behind.

Sweden took silver and bronze, as Linn Persson crossed the line for third, a further 24 seconds back.

All three medallists were perfect on the shooting range but Herrmann-Wick was fastest in the sprint to the line.

“One hardly dares to dream that something like this can happen here,” she said.

“It’s all the nicer that I’m able to experience this today, with family and friends at the side of the track, it’s unbelievable.”
