SIX QUARTERBACKS WHO OVERTOOK TOM BRADY IN THE 2000 NFL DRAFT.

Tom Brady was famously the 199th draft pick in the 2000 NFL draft, but what happened to the six quarterbacks selected ahead of him?

For a guy who was not selected until the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, it’s fair to say Tom Brady has had rather a good career.

Brady has just the seven Super Bowls, three MVP awards, most passing yards and passing touchdowns – and will add to at least some of those when he returns for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.

In what is perhaps the biggest steal in the history of the NFL draft, Tom Brady was not picked until round six and the 199th selection overall – heading from Michigan to New England and team up with Bill Belichick.

But what ever happened to the six quarterbacks picked ahead of Tom Brady in the 2000 NFL draft?

TOM BRADY NFL DRAFT PICK
Although Brady was seen as a decent player who would no doubt have a reasonable NFL career, he was not seen as a key player in the draft.

Indeed, in 2000, Courtney Brown was selected as the first overall pick, but his career was a bust – the defensive end retiring in 2005 after just 61 games in the NFL.

At the time, the New England Patriots were a team in transition and were handed the 199th overall pick in the sixth round of the draft.

A gangly, 23-year-old quarterback from San Mateo, California, plying his trade in Michigan was their target.

Tom Brady was picked in the draft between Matt Bowen of the St Louis Rams and Sherrod Gideon of the New Orleans Saints.

Six quarterbacks were selected ahead of Brady in the draft – but who were they and what happened to them?

Quarterbacks picked ahead of Tom Brady in 2000 NFL draft:

Chad Pennington – New York Jets – Round 1, 18th
Giovanni Carmazzi (below) – San Francisco 49ers – Round 3, 65th

Chris Redman – Baltimore Ravens – Round 3, 75th

Tee Martin – Pittsburgh Steelers – Round 5, 163rd

Marc Bulger – New Orleans Saints – Round 6, 168th

Spergon Wynn (below) – Cleveland Browns – Round 6, 183rd

DID ANY OF THEM WIN THE SUPERBOWL?
It’s fair to say that those quarterbacks picked ahead of Tom Brady did not go onto enjoy the same success he has.

As of the end of the Bucs’ 2022 season, Brady has 278 wins under his belt.

Those six QBs above started 191 games between them, for 258 touchdowns.

Brady currently has 624 touchdowns, as of April 29th, 2022.

Carmazzi never even appeared in a regular season NFL game, while only one has claimed the Superbowl.

Superbowl XXXV was played between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants in 2000.

Redman’s Ravens side ran out 34-7 winners, with the QB normally a back-up player.
