VARANE AS INJURY-PRONE AT REAL MADRID AS HE WAS IN MAN UNITED? ANSWERED

Raphael Varane has picked up yet another injury during France’s game against Denmark in the Nations League.

This is already Varane’s sixth injury he has sustained since joining Man United from Real Madrid less than a year ago.

According to Transfer market, those issues prevented him from playing in 17 games for United last season – and the fans are already expressing their worries that the club signed an injury-prone center-back. But is it actually true?

In fact, there were two periods when Varane missed a substantial number of games at Real Madrid.

In 2013, the Frenchman missed the better part of the year due to serious knee problems. He was sidelined for almost five months with a meniscus issue and then a couple of months more with another knee injury.

The 2016/17 season was more akin to the last campaign as Varane had a series of muscle complaints none of which ruled him out for more than 35 days.

After that, however, Varane enjoyed a rather injury-free spell. In fact, he did not miss a single Real Madrid game due to an injury between November 2018 and May 2021 – two and a half years. Then, he suffered a leg issue that ruled him out for less than three weeks, and it was his last injury in Madrid.

Of course, such problems can pile up as the player ages, but Varane has shown in the last that he can have largely injury-free spells. Erik ten Hag will hope that it will happen in the next season.
