Ajax Fall Into Relegation Zone After Losing To AZ Alkmaar
- Ajax Drop Into Relegation Zone After AZ Humiliation In Amsterdam.
Ajax’s fall from the top continues to be drastic following a 2-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar at home on Sunday.
In their first home game since a fan disrupted Klassieker, manager Maurice Steijn hoped to reward supporters with a strong performance against the new league leaders.
However, it was another day of misery for the Eredivisie giants as they crumbled to a staggering 16th in the table.
Ajax’s attack was lifeless over 90 minutes at Johan Cruijff ArenA where incoming advisor and Dutch legend Louis van Gaal was in attendance.
Vangelis Pavlidis scored in his eighth consecutive Eredivisie game after rifling a shot past Jay Gorter’s near post before Dani de Wit redirected a cross into the box to double the lead for AZ Alkmaar. Both goals saw Ajax’s defence cut to pieces.
The hosts failed to muster up any motivation for a comeback, with their only shot on target arriving in the 73rd minute via substitute Branco van den Boomen who turned things 2-1.
Ajax have just one league win this season and five points to their name. Their last win across all competitions was 24 August.
