Aston Villa Show Interest In Signing Real Madrid Winger Marco Asensio

Aston Villa are hoping to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio this summer, according to The Athletic.

Asensio signed for Real Madrid in 2014, arriving from Mallorca for an estimated €3.9 million fee.

After loan spells with Real Mallorca and Espanyol, he earned himself a regular place in Los Blancos’ first team for the 2016/17 season.

He scored the fourth in their 4-1 Champions League final victory over Juventus and established himself as one of the brightest young talents in world football.

However, he has been unable to fulfil his potential. A serious knee injury in 2019 kept him out of action for a year, and he has been a rotational player at the Bernabeu ever since.

Despite this, the Spaniard is eager to stay with Madrid. His contract expires this summer, and a decision on his future is yet to be made.

If the two parties fail to reach an agreement, a switch to the Premier League could be on the cards, with Villa monitoring his situation with a view to a possible move.

The Villans have been in fine form under manager Unai Emery. Since the former Arsenal boss was appointed in November, only Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool have accumulated more points in the Premier League. This has taken them up to eighth in the table.

With three games remaining, the Midlands side are in with a chance of European football. If they qualify, additional depth will be necessary to cope with the busy fixture schedule.

Villa could use some more options out wide. Their only natural wingers are Leon Bailey and Bertrand Traore. John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey have also covered in these areas.

Emery’s men close the season with three crucial fixtures against fellow European chasers.

They welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Villa Park before finishing with games against Liverpool (A) and Brighton and Hove Albion (H).
