Journalist Gerard Romero has provided a fresh update on Sergio Busquets’ future, saying that the veteran midfielder will remain at the club next season ‘whether someone likes it or not’.
Busquets, 34, sees his current Barcelona contract expiring at the end of the season and over the last few months, while he has proven to be quite an essential member considering all the injuries, there is a budding thought that he should call time on his Barcelona career.
Now, it is known that Xavi wants his veteran midfielder to continue and for that matter, the management has already put forward a one-year extension with an option of another twelve months based on the number of matches he plays next season.
As part of the new contract, Busquets will have to take a significant wage cut as he would earn around €7 million per year, which is less than a third of what he currently gets.
Barcelona’s offer has been on the table for a month, but the 34-year-old is yet to come up with a response.
Over the past few months, Busquets has been a subject of constant exit speculations. In that regard, a move to Major League Soccer is expected to be on cards, with David Beckham’s Inter Miami thought to be the most legible suitor.
As it turns out, Busquets wants to assess all the options carefully before making a decision and Barcelona are ready to give him the liberty as they believe he has earned the right to make the decision.
Meanwhile, it is also said that his continuity largely depends on Lionel Messi’s future. Barcelona’s pursuit of the current PSG player is out in the public and if they do manage to get him in the summer, Busquets will want to play at least one season with the Argentina captain.
