Barcelona Close To LaLiga Title After Victory Over Real Betis
Barcelona hosted Real Betis on Saturday and took another step closer to lifting the LaLiga title with a 4-0 win.
Buckets of rain were no issue for Xavi’s men as Barcelona cruised to victory in front of home fans.
The hosts dominated possession of the ball with Pedri, Frenkie De Jong and Sergio Busquets in midfield but needed strong finishing and a bit of luck to take control of the visitors.
Andreas Christensen opened the scoring on his return and Real Betis went down to 10 men when Edgar Gonzalez was sent off after two yellows in nine minutes.
The man advantage then helped Barcelona open the floodgates as the visitors failed to ignite their attacking line.
Robert Lewandowski’s inch-perfect strike found the far corner for 2-0 before Raphinha added a third by the break thanks to a little help from VAR.
Despite having an extra player for the entire second half, Xavi’s side was forced to settle for just one more goal after the break through a Guido Rodriguez own-goal.
And to add to the celebrations, Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to debut for Barcelona in LaLiga at the age 15. Then Marc-André ter Stegen passed Claudio Bravo’s record for the club goalkeeper with most LaLiga clean sheets in one season (24).
The result means the league leaders are 11 points above Real Madrid while Real Betis are sixth.
Lewandowski also extended his lead for the Pichichi following Karim Benzema’s hat-trick earlier in the day (19 goals to 17).
