With the issue of the Financial Fair Play hanging over their head, FC Barcelona are not in a position to go ahead and sign new players or register the new contracts of current stars as things stand. In order to do that, they must reduce their salary mass by €200 million.
Player sales is seen as one of the most effective tool in achieving that objective and offers will be heard for several first-team players like Franck Kessie, Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, Eric Garcia, and Raphinha.
At the same time, though, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona might look to renegotiate the contracts of two first-team stars in Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong, who are considered ‘non-transferable’.
Both Ter Stegen and De Jong are enjoying fine campaigns this time out. The former has been breaking record after record while the latter has been hugely influential for the team from the middle of the park.
Only last summer, Barça were seriously considering selling De Jong and had even reached an agreement with Manchester United. But the player’s reluctance to leave meant that the operation did not go ahead.
Now, though, the Blaugrana have no desire whatsoever to offload the Netherlands international even though they need to make at least one big sale in their bid to resolve the FFP problems.
But neither De Jong nor Ter Stegen will be put up for sale. However, considering that they are among the highest earners at the club, it seems like the La Liga leaders are considering renegotiating their contracts to lower their wages.
It remains to be seen negotiations go with regard to the reduction of salaries with the key duo go as Barcelona look to get their wage bill within the limits stipulated by the league.
