Barcelona Considering Summer Move For 22-Year-Old Dutch Defender
As Barcelona look forward to the summer transfer window, one of the problem areas they must address is the right-back position.
The club do not have a reliable and recognised option in the position. Sergi Roberto’s contract was extended in the hope that the veteran can continue for one more season. The club are also banking on the versatility of Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo.
In the market, Barça have been linked with moves for Juan Foyth, Diogo Dalot and Joao Cancelo among others. Bayern Munich ace Noussair Mazraoui was the most recent player to be linked with a move to Camp Nou, but they are all expected to command a hefty price tag.
That is why Barcelona are keeping tabs on Lutsharel Geertruida, reports Gerard Romero. The 22-year-old is a right-back, who currently plies his trade for Feyenoord.
In recent years, Geertruida has found immense success at Feyenoord, even racking up almost 150 competitive appearances for the club. He has gone under the radar, despite his speed, athleticism and attacking prowess. The youngster has scored 15 goals for Feyenoord already.
Barcelona are aware of Geertruida’s rapid rise to prominence and entertaining the idea of incorporating him into the first team next season.
The Dutchman’s speed and athleticism could make him an interesting option for coach Xavi Hernandez and a more dynamic alternative to the likes of Roberto, Araujo and Kounde.
However, luring him away from Feyenoord could be tricky. The player still has a contract at the Dutch club till 2025, meaning the club must may some form of transfer premium if they are to secure the services of the youngster.
We can expect more information regarding Barcelona’s pursuit of Geertruida in the coming weeks, as the club look to focus on team-building after securing the league title.
