Barcelona Director Mateu Alemany Discusses Lionel Messi’s Return

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a return of Lionel Messi, who looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

The Argentine’s contract expires this summer, and PSG have reportedly decided not to proceed with renewal talks.

PSG want Messi to accept a pay cut to continue at Parc des Princes as they are working on trimming their wage bill.

The 35-year-old has no plans of yielding to PSG’s insistence and is ready to part ways with the French giants this summer.

Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal have tabled a lucrative offer to Messi, but he wants to stay in Europe.

Barca vice president Rafa Yuste previously stated that Barca owe Messi a second spell, while Director of Football Mateu Alemany has now delivered his verdict on the possible reunion with the Argentine.

Although he didn’t give a definite answer, Alemany emphasised the importance of Messi to Barca’s history.

“I have nothing to say about this subject,” said Alemany (h/t Sport).

“Messi is the living history of Barcelona – he is the best in the history of football. The esteem he has in this house is unquestionable.

“He is at PSG fighting for titles and we are fighting for ours. In the future, we will see what happens.”

Alemany also added that things are heading in a positive direction regarding their efforts to ease the financial troubles and also comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Messi’s return depends on whether the Blaugrana can reduce their wage bill significantly before the summer.

The Blaugrana fans showed their support for Messi by chanting his name at Camp Nou during the Copa del Rey clash against Real Madrid last night.
