According to Mundo Deportivo’s Roger Torello, Barcelona are hoping to get a response from club captain Sergio Busquets over his contract renewal over the next couple of weeks.
Busquets is in the final phase of his current contract with the Blaugrana and has an offer on the table from the club.
Indeed, Barcelona have sent forth a one-year renewal offer with an option of another twelve months based on the number of matches he plays next term.
The deal would see a significant wage drop for the 34-year-old as he would earn around €7 million per year, which is less than a third of what he currently pockets.
It has been over a month since Barcelona sent over their offer, but have not received a response from Busquets, even though it was expected that he would make a decision by mid-April.
Back in January, the former Spanish international was understood to have made up his mind to leave the club for the MLS. However, manager Xavi Hernandez’s persuasion and the possible return of former teammate Lionel Messi in the summer have forced him to rethink his stance.
Busquets also has much more lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia while the proposal from the MLS is also said to be higher than what Barcelona are offering. Hence, the midfielder is thinking over all his options carefully before making a decision.
Barcelona, for their part, have not pressurised their captain into taking a call on his future because they believe he has earned the right to decide it on his own time.
However, with the season entering the final phase, Barça now hope to learn the midfielder’s decision and are expecting him to inform them about his next move either next week or the first week of May latest.
Given that the club need to plan for his departure, in case he opts not to renew, it is only natural for them to want to learn about his decision at the earliest.
