Barcelona are eyeing up a reunion with former striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, according to Sky Sports.
Aubameyang previously spent seven months at the Camp Nou from February to September 2022. In that time, he impressed, scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.
However, with the club struggling financially, the Gabon international was sold to Chelsea earlier this season. At the Blues, he has failed to produce his best form, bagging only one league goal.
The 33-year-old appears to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, having featured just twice in the last three months. Following a very busy January transfer window, he was left out of then-manager Graham Potter’s Champions League squad in order to make room for the new signings.
Now, he could be offered a way out. According to Sky Sports, Barcelona have made him their number one striker target this summer.
Manager Xavi is looking for cover and competition for first choice forward Robert Lewandowski. The Poland international has been a hit in his debut campaign at La Blaugrana, leading the La Liga Pichichi race with 17 goals.
Aubameyang offers a different option to the former Bayern Munich man. Additionally, he is seen by the manager as a good character in the dressing room, despite accusations to the contrary throughout his career.
The Premier League Golden Boot winner isn’t the only forward on Barcelona’s shortlist, with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino also linked. The Brazilian has confirmed that he will leave Anfield in the summer, following eight highly successful years.
Alas, the priority for the Catalan giants remains the homecoming of club legend Lionel Messi. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been heavily linked with a return to the Camp Nou, with his contract at Paris Saint-Germain set to expire in the summer.
Barcelona are closing in on their first La Liga title in four years. They sit 11 points clear at the top of the table, and need another 14 points from their final eight outings to secure the trophy.
