While speculations linking Inigo Martinez to a move to Camp Nou have dissipated lately, there is every indication that Barcelona are keen on securing a deal for a new defender ahead of the coming summer.
Inigo Martinez’s deal might be done and dusted, awaiting only a confirmation from La Liga over the FFP regulations. But Barça are determined to strengthen their ranks further in the defensive unit, especially following the retirement of Gerard Pique at the end of last year.
One potential target for Barcelona is Aymeric Laporte, with the Catalans highly attentive to his situation at Manchester City, reports Diario AS.
Barça have been linked with a move for Laporte in the past. He was even one of the club’s top options due to his technical prowess and exposure to La Liga, having previously played for Athletic Club. But the club were not able to strike a deal due to various factors.
However, the situation has changed radically this season, with Laporte finding it difficult to get regular minutes under Pep Guardiola. He has fallen behind the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji in the pecking order.
Everything indicates he will be allowed to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. Barcelona, to that end, are keeping close tabs on the defender.
The player is open to leaving Etihad, in search of another adventure elsewhere. While it is too early to tell whether or not he would join Barcelona, a move to Catalonia is indeed an appealing option for the Spaniard as he looks to revive his career.
Barça’s pursuit of Laporte, though, will rely on multiple factors and it may take some time for the Catalans to make the provision in their wage bill, before they can make an approach for the former Athletic Club starlet.
