BOLOGNA 2-1-INTER MILAN; INTER MISS OUT ON GOING ON TOP OF SERIE A TABLE AS BOLOGNA CAPITALIZE ON FUNNY MISTAKE.
Inter Milan hit a major roadblock in the Serie A title-tussle as they were agonisingly beaten 2-1 at Bologna, as ‘I Nerazzurri’ succumbed to their first league defeat since February just at the worst-possible time.
It was still all to play for at the summit of Serie A, with defending champions Inter knowing the importance of winning this game in hand. ‘I Nerazzurri’ immediately stepped on the gas, and opened the scoring inside just four minutes. Ivan Perišić’s superb individual drive towards goal concluded with an exquisite left-footed strike from the edge of the box, which left Łukasz Skorupski well-beaten, as the Croatian celebrated his sixth goal of the league campaign.
Bologna, who had won just two of their last nine Serie A games on home turf, initially struggled to contain the title-chasers, with Lautaro Martínez squandering two significant chances as he fired past the woodwork. Inter were soon left rueing their missed opportunities, as ‘I Rossoblù’ pulled level midway through the half, when Marko Arnautović met Musa Barrow’s inviting cross into the area, and brilliantly guided the ball into the net.
Inter brought on Edin Džeko after the hour-mark, who was looking to add to his 16-goal tally this season to try to drag his team over the line. It all boiled down to the final stages of the contest, but ‘I Rossoblù’ held their nerve and snatched a late-winner to stun the visitors, as Nicola Sansone slotted home from point-blank range, pouncing on an unfortunate mishap from Ionuț Radu, who had swung wildly at a backpass and missed.
It is a miss that in all likelihood will see the blue ribbons on the Scudetto turn red, as Inter are left reflecting on one of the most infamous nights they’ve endured in living memory. The eyebrow-raising victory now sees Bologna extend their unbeaten run to five league games, as they look ahead to next season.
