Cristiano Ronaldo Nominated For Goal Of The Month Award
Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike against Brighton gave manchester a win last month, has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s February Goal of the Month award.
Manchester United super star superbly broke the deadlock in a midweek victory over the Seagulls (Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club) at Old Trafford, with the effort one of eight goals up for the league’s monthly accolade.
Cristiano has been nominated alongside Matty Cash (Aston Villa), Neal Maupay (Brighton), Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace), Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace), Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Oriol Romeu (Southampton) and Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur).
With the game against Brighton tied at 0-0 early in the second half, the ball fell to Cristiano after a well-timed interception from Scott McTominay.
The Portuguese powered forward into some space, worked an angle for himself in between the oncoming crowd of visiting defenders on the edge of the penalty area and rifled the ball into the net to open the scoring, with the goalkeeper left standing.
It’s the second of CR7’s nine Premier League goals this season to be nominated for the award, after his volley away to Tottenham was shortlisted among October’s nominees.
Since the accolade not introduced until the start of the 2016/17 season, Cristiano never had the chance to win it during his first spell in England, while there are four players that have won it in the past at United.
Edinson Cavani is the most recent, in May 2021, for his chip against Fulham at the latter end of the previous campaign, while Bruno Fernandes netted the pick of the bunch for March/June 2020 and February 2021 against Brighton and Everton respectively.
Before then, Antonio Valencia was crowned the winner for his thunderbolt against the Toffees in September 2017, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the first Red to ever claim the award, for his famous scorpion-kick effort versus Sunderland in December 2016.
