Tottenham Hotspur are looking at a surprise move to sign Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster – a player branded “exceptional” by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta this season. Forster is out of contract at the end of the season.
Forster, 34, has broken back into Southampton’s side of late – overtaking Angus Gunn between the sticks. He ex-Celtic and Newcastle stopper has produced some remarkable displays, even getting an England call-up.
However, his long-term future is in doubt. Southampton are seemingly unwilling to extend his contract – which is a costly £70,000 a week (Spotrac). TalkSPORT say Tottenham are looking to bring him to North London.
Antonio Conte has informed Pierluigi Gollini he will not be remaining at Spurs beyond the end of the season as cover for Hugo Lloris. Forster could come in to replace him – a player that Arteta raved about earlier this term.
Last month, Southampton beat Arsenal 1-0 thanks to Jan Bednarek’s goal – but relied on Forster to keep a clean sheet. Arteta said: “They had an exceptional goalkeeper today, we didn’t have enough quality and enough.”
TOTTENHAM WANT FORSTER: ARSENAL BOSS ARTETA SAYS HE IS ‘EXCEPTIONAL’
It is a smart signing. Forster is a top-quality stopper and has shown that over the years in the Premier League with Southampton, and in the Champions League with Celtic. At 34, he might be happy to play back-up.
On a free, Tottenham could do a lot worse than Forster. Experienced, Forster will have a solid relationship with the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Harry Winks. Perhaps a surprise, but a decent signing for Spurs.
