Currently 11 points clear on top of La Liga, Barcelona are cruising to their first league trophy in four seasons. This charge is led by none other than Xavi, who has managed to lead a risky rebuild from the helm.
While the Catalans have fallen out of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, the board is more than happy with the progress made by Barcelona over the season, and are willing to reward Xavi with a contract extension already.
Xavi’s current contract expires in 2024, but Joan Laporta and co. want to add another two years to his deal as a sign of trust. The club have formally tabled a two-year extension to the Spaniard, and it is only a matter of time before he ends up putting pen to paper.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Xavi will be extending his contract once the league is over – likely ending in another trophy triumph for Barcelona.
The manager is already planning his and the team’s future along with the board, led by Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff.
Laporta has publicly spoken about this as well, saying that the young manager deserves an extension even if the team does not win the league.
“I’m considering renewing Xavi, even if he doesn’t win the league. I think we have to renew him, he says not yet and that first we have to win La Liga. He deserves it. I’ve considered renewing him,” he said.
While understandably flattered, Xavi responded to Laporta’s statements saying that his priority right now is to win trophies.
“The club wanting to renew my contract makes me happy because it’s a sign of absolute confidence. But before that, we need to win titles this season. If we do, I think the conditions will be perfect to continue with the project.”
Barcelona are coming off a 2-1 loss against Rayo Vallecano in the league, and will take on Real Betis tomorrow, hoping to continue their charge en route to the La Liga trophy.
