Former Liverpool Goalkeeper Joins Wellington Phoenix
- Former Liverpool goalkeeper Rylee Foster Joins Wellington Phoenix.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Rylee Foster has joined Liberty A-League club Wellington Phoenix on a one-year deal.
The Phoenix announced the news via a post on their official club website a short time ago.
Foster joins her new club on a free transfer after leaving former side Liverpool at the end of last season. The Canadian international spent three-and-a-half years with The Reds but her progress on Merseyside was severely hindered by injuries sustained in a serious road traffic accident in October 2021. Foster broke her neck in the incident and spent months in rehabilitation. The player endured a nervous wait to learn whether she would ever play football again.
After completing her recovery, Foster made the decision to continue her footballing career. She is now ready to take to the field once again with new club Wellington Phoenix.
After joining The Phoenix, Foster said “The fact that I’m alive is phenomenal. The injury that I sustained is known to kill you instantly, if not become a tetraplegic, which is what Christopher Reeve was.
“Joining The Phoenix is very symbolic. It’s a new becoming. It’s an arising from something that was literally in ashes.
“I’ve been through a lot in the last two years, more than most people go through in their whole lives. There have been a lot of sacrifices and blood, sweat and tears to get to this point, and a lot of hurdles in regard to physical and mental health.
“I’m so happy that you’ll not only get to see me as a footballer here, but the new and improved side of myself with all the lessons that I’ve learned over the last two years and the adversity I’ve faced.
“This new version of myself could potentially be the best of the best and that’s what I’m excited about.”
Wellington Phoenix kick-off the new Liberty A-League season next month.
