Gerard Romero: Barcelona Will Not Announce Deco’s Appointment As Sporting Director Today
Over the past 24 hours or so, there have been speculations about Barcelona making some important announcements later today.
There is a meeting of directors scheduled for today afternoon, following which the club have called for a press meet at 7 pm today.
As per reports, the new La Liga champions were planning to announce the new sleeve sponsorship agreement with Philips, along with another potential sponsorship deal. At the same time, there were murmurs of Deco’s appointment as the sporting director being confirmed.
However, according to the reliable Gerard Romero, the confirmation of Deco taking over as the sporting director at FC Barcelona will not arrive today.
The journalist states that the former Barcelona midfielder is still in the process of disassociating from his player representation agency, only after which can his appointment be made official.
Barcelona were initially lining up Deco as a replacement for Mateu Alemany, who had announced that he would leave the club. However, the director of football made a U-turn on his future and will continue with the Catalans.
But with Jordi Cruyff also leaving, the Blaugrana needed a replacement for him and Deco will be taking over as the sporting director. However, the official announcement will not be arriving today.
One of the former midfielder’s main objectives, once he takes over, would be to facilitate the signing of Athletico Paranaense and Brazil wonderkid Vitor Roque.
Apart from that, he and Alemany will also have to engineer sales of players who are not in the manager’s plans as Barcelona look to meet the Financial Fair Play requirements.
