Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar reportedly turned down a proposal from Manchester United last summer.
That is according to Patrick Berger of SPORT1, who confirmed the Red Devils were one of several clubs to make an approach for the Algerian international.
The 24-year-old was heavily linked to Arsenal two years ago but a deal never materialised. Now, he is set to join Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt as a free agent, meaning United would have had to pay Lyon’s asking price to free him from his contract last year.
Ten Hag’s alternatives
Erik ten Hag eventually opted to bring in Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in his first transfer window to bolster the midfield, both of which have proved to be instrumental in United’s resurgence.
Marcel Sabitzer also joined on loan in January and could be made a permanent player at the end of the season, as reports suggest he is keen on staying at Old Trafford.
