Barcelona have been keeping tabs on a certain Ilkay Gundogan to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. The German becomes a free agent in the summer, and would arrive on a Bosman transfer, which fits perfectly in the Catalans’ plans.
According to an update from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are still waiting for Gundogan to decide his future. The player is taking his time as a new contract from City would probably mean he completes his career in the Premier League.
The journalist also claims that there is another club interested in Gundo’s signature, and the final decision will rest on the player.
If rumours are to be believed, Barcelona will offer the 32-year-old a two-year contract, and will have to reduce his wages to match the club’s financial structure.
As for City, they have already seemingly given up hope of retaining Gundogan’s services for the next season, and are convinced that he will end up signing for Barcelona.
Xavi and the coaching staff are reportedly huge fans of the player and believe he can perform multiple roles to perfection in midfield, including playing higher up as an interior, or at the base in a double pivot similar to the one deployed currently.
Further, his experience will be crucial to a Barcelona squad still quite young. With Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba’s futures in doubt, too, Gundogan could prove to be one of the captains without the armband should be arrive.
The Man City captain has been in England for six years now, and is enjoying one of his best seasons right now. He has scored three goals and given three assists across 24 appearances in the Prem.
