The Kiwi soccer star came out as gay to one of her close friends in 2012. 20 at the time, Hannah felt the weight of the world being lifted from her shoulder after she confided to her friend about her feelings.
In her interview, Hannah claimed she feared how her supporters would react after the news of her being gay broke out. But she was pleasantly surprised by the support she received.
Hannah looked up to players like Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach, who she claims have always been her role model.
In her interview, Wilkinson also added she felt lucky she comes from a country like New Zealand, a diverse and liberal nation, where being gay isn’t considered wrong.
The soccer player understood that she comes from a position where she can set an example for younger individuals. She added being gay doesn’t make any person less of a human or an athlete, and we should truly learn to embrace ourselves.

Hannah Wilkinson’s partner, Katie Isabelle Martin, is a Senior Instructor at Victoria Police.
Prior to graduating from the Queensland University of Technology with a criminology degree in 2022, Katie earned an Australian Institute of Fitness certificate in 2013.
Katie worked as a fitness instructor and personal trainer in Brisbane for nine years until 2022. In 2021, Katie began working in the police field as a research officer for Queensland Police Service.
Since 2022, Katie has been working with Victoria Police, where she started as a legal support officer. Marting quickly climbed the ranks and was promoted to the intelligence support office in February.
Earlier this month, in July, Katie received another promotion and began working as a senior instructor. Katie is available on Instagram with the username @katieisabellemartin but has kept her handle private.

On April 10, 2023, Hannah shared a mirror selfie of her and Katie on their second anniversary.
The couple may have begun dating in April 2021, but the two became Instagram official in December. Hannah shared the photo of them with a Christmas tree in the background and captioned the post, “From me and mine, to you and yours. Merry Christmas.”
And on New Year, the soccer player shared another couple of photos with her beau thanking 2021 for bringing Katie into her life. Being part of the LGBTQ community, Hannah has in the past shared posts with her partner on Pride Month.
Last year she shared a beautiful black-and-white picture with Katie on International Day Against Homophobia. The couple currently lives in Brisbane, Queensland, with their two furry babies.
