La Liga President Seeks Explanation From Barcelona Over Negreira Case: “They Should Br Worried“
A lot has been said over the Negreira payoff scandal recently, with La Liga reportedly being involved in taking up the issue with UEFA. The European authority, in turn, has vowed to launch an investigation against Barcelona over the matter.
This happened even after Spain’s Prosecutor’s Office found no evidence against Barcelona’s involvement in result manipulation. A leaked document also supported the Catalan club.
However, amid all the proceedings and legal discourse, Barcelona have remained surprisingly silent over the issue. The club had launched an external investigation into the matter but that was about the end of it.
Recent reports have suggested that the club are gathering all information and evidence to support their cause. Their legal team and communication team are also working full time, with the club firm on their stance of non-involvement on the matter.
In light of Barça’s silence, La Liga president Javier Tebas has recently urged the club to speak out. “I still don’t know why Laporta doesn’t give explanations. Barcelona should worry,” he said (h/t MARCA) in a recent media appearance.
Tebas stressed the importance and impact of the investigation, adding, “The Negrera case does not make me sleep, it is the most serious case in the history of Spanish football.”
Despite the silence, though, recent reports suggest Barcelona will make Joan Laporta appear before the press, most likely in April.
Laporta himself has signalled warning at entities that want to tamper with the club’s prestige, insinuating that Barcelona are not only ready to defend themselves but also attack, if necessary.
The coming weeks, therefore, could prove to be crucial, as far as the Negreira scandal is concerned. One would expect the ongoing international break should give the club some valuable time to sort out the information and evidence before putting forth a comprehensive argument against the court.
