Man City Midfielder Hails Sergio Busquets As The Best Ever In His Position
Spain are set to kickstart their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign when they take on Norway on Saturday.
Ahead of the game, one of Spain’s most important midfielders in Rodri spoke about the team’s prospects under new coach Luis de la Fuente. In the same interview with EFE Deportes, the Manchester City star also heaped praise on Sergio Busquets.
“Busquets is the BEST pivot in our history,” Rodri said about Busquets, who is staring at an uncertain future at Barcelona, with his current contract at Camp Nou expiring at the end of the season.
A homegrown star at Barça, Busquets shares an excellent record with the Spanish national team. He featured in 143 matches for La Roja, a tally only bettered by two players in Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos, who received praise from Nacho Fernandez in another interview.
Busquets retired from international football at the end of last year, following Spain’s debacle at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The midfielder, though, had won the World Cup and European Championship with La Roja during his illustrious career.
Nevertheless, the veteran is currently focusing on his future ahead. Barcelona are keen on keeping hold of his services beyond the summer and have already come up with a renewal offer.
It is now up to Busquets, who has been also courted by clubs across Saudi Arabia and MLS, to decide his future. While his family would prefer that he stays in Catalonia, the lucrative offers from the MIddle East and North American could be difficult to turn down.
A lot could be clarified in the coming weeks, as we approach the final phase of the 2022/23 campaign, with Barça pressuring the midfielder to make a decision.
