As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director Ronald Virkus has officially confirmed that Marcus Thuram will not renew with the club and will thus be available as a free agent come June.
“We were in open contact with both players and we knew the current state, it is a shame that they are not going to extend their contracts about to expire, because both have given us a lot in the last four years,” Virkus said with respect to the situations of Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini who will both leave the club in the summer.
The offices at Spotify Camp Nou will be alert to the notification, for the young winger is one of the Catalans’ prime options to reinforce the squad for next season. After all, his case is a unique one for players with such talent are seldom available as free agents.
The 25-year-old French international provides an interesting profile on the table as he is capable of playing both as a winger and centre-forward. Given Barcelona’s riches on the right wing, his signature would perfectly complement Xavi Hernanadez’s setup.
In 26 Bundesliga appearances for the German club this season, Thuram has scored 13 goals and provided four assists. Moreover, he averages a key pass in every game and has created five big chances.
Previously, Thuram’s father, Lilian, who spent time at Barcelona as a player, had confirmed that both he and his son would welcome the idea of a move to Camp Nou. The forward after all was part of the La Masia setup even if it was for a brief period.
Yet, his move to Catalonia at the moment is not much more than a fantasy. Though the club have him on their list, the battle for his signature will begin in the coming weeks, especially given that the likes of Bayern Munich are interested in his signature.
With his exit now confirmed, it is only a matter of time before other clubs from Europe’s elite join his pursuit.
