Official: Barcelona’s Opponent For Next Season’s Spanish Super Cup Semi-Final Confirmed
Barcelona’s La Liga triumph on Sunday following their 4-2 win over Espanyol means that the Blaugrana will now face Copa del Rey runners-up Osasuna in the next season’s Supercopa de Espana semi-final.
Since the 2019/20 edition, Spanish Super Cup has been contested between four teams, meaning that in order to qualify for the final, the four teams will first play in the semi-final round.
Teams qualifying for the semi-final would be the winners and the runners-up of Copa del Rey and La Liga of the previous season. This means Real Madrid, who won the Copa del Rey, have also qualified for the next season’s Spanish Super Cup.
In case of an overlap between the teams, the club finishing third in La Liga would be included in the competition.
Since the alteration in the format, the Spanish Super Cup has found a new home at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah in a deal worth €120 million. Interestingly enough, in order to avoid fixture congestion and travel fatigue, the competition has also been moved to January.
Since 2019, when the four-team competition came into effect, Real Madrid have won the title twice while Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona have won it once. Barcelona’s latest triumph in the competition was on January 15 when the team defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in the final.
After having beaten Real Betis 4-2 on penalties in the final four, Barça locked horns with Madrid in the final. In front of 57,000 spectators, Gavi opened the scoring three minutes after the half-hour mark.
Robert Lewandowski and Pedri followed suit to make it three before Karim Benzema scored the consolation goal in the added minutes to deny Barcelona the clean sheet.
Now that Barcelona have been crowned the La Liga champions, they will take on Copa del Rey runners-up Osasuna in the semi-final while Real Madrid, winners of the cup competition, will take on the team that finishes second/third in the league.
