Surprise reports emerged this week suggesting that Manchester United could sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham, with Erik Ten Hag a big fan. Surely, it hands Spurs the perfect chance to bring in Dean Henderson.
Bergwijn, 25, has been strongly linked with a move to Ajax – where Ten Hag remains manager and will do until the end of the season. But numerous reports state that the Dutchman has agreed to replace Ralf Rangnick.
The Mail reports that Ten Hag is keen on bringing Bergwijn to Old Trafford, with a fee of £20million required to tempt Spurs. But perhaps, a fee might not be needed to sign the Netherlands international in the coming weeks.
Ten Hag watched Bergwijn score a brace for his country against Denmark in the most-recent international break – and is confident he could improve United’s attacking resources. But Spurs should have a swap deal in mind.
The Mirror recently claimed that despite handing Hugo Lloris a new contract, Spurs still have an interest in England international Henderson. The goalkeeper is likely to leave Old Trafford this summer.
While Lloris will remain no.1, Henderson’s chances of overtaking Lloris are much more likely than David De Gea at Old Trafford – not least because Lloris can be guilty of a mistake, but because Lloris turns 36 in December.
A move to Spurs would see Henderson remain no.2 for perhaps a season or two – but even then, he would be given outings in Cup competitions. Then, he would replace Lloris between the sticks. It makes sense.
So, if United are intent on signing Bergwijn with Ten Hag expected to be in the dugout next season – Spurs and Fabio Paratici should use it to their advantage and bring in Henderson, with Pierluigi Gollini likely to go.
