Having already signed five strikers this season, Orlando Pirates don’t seem to be in the mood to slow down, after links to Kenyan Benson Omala.
Omala currently plies his trade for Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and his contribution to that league this season has not gone unnoticed with Pirates lurking.
OMALA IS KPL’S TOP GOAL SCORER
The Kenyan international striker has been in red hot form for Gor Mahia this season and he finds himself at the top of the KPL goal scorers chart with 19 goals. That now seems to be the type of form from Omala that has attracted the attention of Pirates.
Omala currently has a 100% strike rate for Gor Mahia in the KPL, having scored 19 goals in 19 matches for the East African giants. Pirates, who have already recruited the likes of Bienvenu Eva Nga, Evidence Magkopa, Kermit Erasmus, Ndumiso Mabena as well as Cameroonian international Souaibo Marou.
None of those acquisitions have set the scene alight for the Buccaneers, however, and according to goal.com Africa, have prompted Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro to look further afield.
PIRATES INTERESTED IN THE STRIKER
“Pirates interest has been there for a couple of weeks now. They are interested in the player, However, we will do what is right for both the club and Omala, we know his qualities and he matches our ambitions. I will not disclose more information on the same, everything is in the initial stage.”. A top Gor Mahia official told the publication.
At only 21, Omala is regarded as a huge prospect in Kenya, with the striker already a full international for the Harambe Stars. He joined Gor Mahia straight from high school and has had two loan spells during his time at the club. The most recent being to Swedish side FC Linkoping City.
STRIKER SHAKE UP LOADING?
If Pirates do, indeed, end up moving for Omala, it will be interesting to see what they will do with their already overloaded strike force.
