Liverpool Montevideo midfield prodigy Fabricio Diaz has been on the radars of FC Barcelona for a while now, heading into the upcoming summer transfer window.
In fact, last week, it emerged that the 20-year-old defensive midfielder’s agent, Martin Rodriguez Nader, was at the Ciutat Esportiva complex to meet Barcelona officials over a possible summer transfer.
Now, as per reports relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have already ‘closed the signing’ of Diaz from Liverpool Montevideo in a deal worth €8 million.
It is claimed that the 20-year-old would arrive in the summer and join the Barça Atletic squad but keep shuttling between the reserves and the first team. But, the operation will again depend on the Financial Fair Play margin that the Catalans have.
Diaz was being chased by South American giants like River Plate and Flamengo. It had even been reported that the Uruguayan wonderkid would prefer to continue his development closer to his homeland for now before seeking a move to Europe.
But, it seems like that stance has changed, with Barcelona understood to have closed the deal for the 20-year-old holding midfielder. Despite his young age, Diaz is already the captain of Liverpool Montevideo.
The youngster was also one of the star performers at the South American U-20 Championships earlier this year.
Barcelona wished to close the deal for him before the FIFA U-20 World Cup this summer as good performances there could lead to greater interest in him and an increase in his value.
It remains to be seen if the La Liga leaders have actually gone ahead and sealed an agreement to sign Diaz in a deal worth €8 million. Regarded as one of the best prospects coming through the South American, Barça would have a gem on their hands if they have indeed closed his signing.
