Report: Barcelona Manager Xavi Hernandez Message To Club Players After Girona Draw
Barcelona failed to win their second game in a row as they were held to a goalless draw by Girona last night. The result meant Barça squashed the opportunity to extend their lead at the top to 15 points, after Real Madrid fell to a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Villarreal.
However, according to Javi Miguel of AS, Xavi pushed a positive mindset onto the players even after Barcelona’s disappointing result against Girona. The head coach stressed the fact that the club ultimately extended their lead at the top of the table, albeit by just one point.
“The balance of the matchday has been good. We’ve increased our lead over Real Madrid by one point, there’s one game less to go before the end of La Liga and also one week less to recover all the injured players,” Xavi is understood to have said to the players.
The positive tone of Xavi’s speech was quite calculated as the Spaniard had figured that the team is in low spirits and in a difficult space, which started with midweek’s cup exit at the hands of Real Madrid.
With Barcelona drawing against Girona, the club now hold a formidable 13-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid, with ten matches left to be played.
The result also meant that Barcelona could miss out on breaking several records including Juventus’ record of 102 points – the highest in the top five leagues. However, the Blaugrana are en route to finishing the season with the highest number of clean sheets by any team in Europe.
Encouraging the team to sacrifice themselves during the remainder of the season, Xavi added, “Where the legs don’t go, the head does.”
Following two matches without a win, Barcelona will be looking to get back to winning momentum when they take on Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Sunday.
