Earlier today, AS reported a big story claiming that Chelsea had held talks with the agent of Barcelona midfielder Gavi over a possible transfer in the summer. It was claimed that the 18-year-old was upset with the club over the handling of his contract registration with La Liga.
And, Chelsea were looking to capitalise as Gavi would become available for a free transfer in the summer if his new contract is unregistered.
But, now according to Sique Rodriguez on Carrusel Deportivo, while there is a clause for Gavi to leave for free if his first-team registration is not complete, the midfielder wants to stay at Barcelona.
This is in line with previous reports which had stated that the midfield prodigy was relaxed over the contract situation while the club too were calm about it as both parties wanted to continue the partnership.
A product of the La Masia youth academy, Gavi broke into the first-team setup during the 2021/22 season under Ronald Koeman and quickly became a mainstay in the side.
Just 18 years of age, the midfield prodigy is a regular fixture in the starting XI for Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
Gavi had signed a new contract with the Blaugrana in September last year. However, it was not registered at the time due to Financial Fair Play issues.
The club, however, managed to register the youngster as a first-team player with his new contract in January by obtaining a precautionary measure from the court.
However, the precautionary measure was suspended last month and Barcelona’s subsequent appeal was also dismissed, which meant Gavi’s first-team registration was overturned.
Apart from Chelsea, teams like Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also taken note of his situation as there is a clause for him to be able to leave for free if the first-team registration is not done.
But, as things stand, Gavi wants to stay at Barcelona. And it is up to the club to take steps to ensure that the contract registrations are taken care of first thing in the summer.
