Report: Joan Laporta And Xavi Want Jordi Cruyff To Replace Mateu Alemany
Journalist Ivan San Antonio, via SPORT, has reported that Barcelona want Jordi Cruyff to take over the role of Mateu Alemany once the sporting director finishes his duty at the end of the season and for that, Joan Laporta and Xavi have been personally pressing him on that.
Laporta and Xavi, are on the same page regarding Cruyff’s capabilities as they believe he is still a key figure in the development of the Blaugrana sports project.
Barça’s blueprint, however, has a major loophole. As it turns out, Cruyff’s ongoing deal with the club ends in June, and while the management wants him to renew, the son of the legendary footballer, Johan Cruyff, has not yet made a decision regarding his future.
Interestingly enough, Barcelona are encouraging him to continue beyond his current deal, but the 49-year-old is not really taking the decision in an accelerated way.
Earlier this month, we revealed that only a day after Alemany’s exit was confirmed, reports emerged that Cruyff is evaluating his future as well.
There were reports that Cruyff and Xavi seem to be not getting along regarding sporting decisions. That, however, was nothing but a hoax as Antonio clearly mentions that the executive maintains a close relationship with Xavi as thy they speak the same football language.
As of today, the loss of Alemany and Cruyff together is simply unaffordable for Barcelona. This is exactly why as soon as Alemany’s departure was confirmed, Laporta was very clear that the ideal person to take over from him was Cruyff.
Now, Xavi, just like Laporta, understands this is a very personal decision for Cruyff, but he has asked the executive to assess the work they can do together in the future. In the past, Cruyff has tailored some important deals for Barcelona and the management wants to continue doing that.
For the moment, the ball is in Jordi Cruff’s court and it must be noted that neither the potential arrival of Deco or Alemany’s exit in June will affect his decision. If he ends up signing a new contract, he will do so solely on the basis of his own judgement.
