Robert Lewandowski’s Goal At Old Trafford To Cost Barcelona €1.25 Million
Barcelona took a major financial risk in the summer when they roped in Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich. The total cost of the transfer of ̉€45 million, with an additional €5 million in variables.
Questions were raised regarding the forward’s longevity as he was set to turn 34 at the time and had very few years remaining at the top level.
But as we approach the second half of the campaign, Lewandowski has done extremely well. He has become the undisputed leader of the Barça frontline, and despite the team’s 2-1 defeat in midweek, his goal at Old Trafford extended his tally to 25 goals in 30 competitive matches.
However, Lewandowski’s goal against Manchester United could cost Barcelona. The forward’s milestone of 25 goals this season means Barça now owe Bayern Munich a figure of around €1.25 million, as part of the €5 million variables that are agreed upon in the summer, reports Diario AS.
Although the figure is not particularly significant, it will certainly affect Barcelona, especially at a time when the Catalans have lost out on potential revenue due to their elimination from the UEFA Europa League at the hands of Manchester United.
It was Barcelona’s fourth elimination from European competition in 15 months, raising questions on whether or not the acquisition of Lewandowski and other stars were worth it.
The Blaugrana, though, have been doing exceedingly well in La Liga. Xavi, in fact, is close to equalling the record of 62 points in the league, which is currently Barcelona’s best-ever start to a league season after 23 matches – previously achieved by Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova.
A win against Almeria on Sunday could see Xavi’s Barça equal the record. Lewandowski, meanwhile, will be hoping to extend his scoring record, having netted only once in the last three league matches.
