SALAH WAS SHOCKED BY BALLON D’OR POSITION LAST SEASON, WANTS TO JOIN GEORGE WEAH AS AFRICAN WINNERS OF THE AWARD
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has expressed shock at his position on the Ballon d’Or list last season
Liverpool and Egypt star, Mohamed Salah, has ambitions of becoming the second African to win the Ballon d’Or award.
The English Premier League top scorer is one of the favourites for the award following another fine campaign with the Reds.
Salah in an interview with L’Equipe expressed shock at his seventh place finish last season but hopes to make amends in 2022.
“I want to win it to join George Weah, the only African,” he said.
“It’s true that I was shocked by my ranking in 2021. For this year, the [Champions League] defeat against Real Madrid is a disadvantage, even if I played a good game in the final.
“But it doesn’t cancel out everything I’ve achieved for months. Let’s wait for the vote. And if I’m not Ballon d’Or winner in 2022, I’ll do everything I can to be the next one.”
Mohamed Salah won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup in the just ended season, but will face stern competition from UEFA Champions League winner Karim Benzema for the award.
The Frenchman was key to Los Blanco’s success this season, and finished the European season as top scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
