This past Tuesday, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets provided an update on his future, confirming that he will soon announce his decision about whether or not he will renew his contract.
“I have almost made the final decision about my future. Now, there are a couple days off, and when I come back, I will surely inform Xavi,” he had said.
Busquets’ current contract with Barcelona expires on June 30 and the midfielder has been offered a one-year renewal by the club albeit at a much lower salary. The proposal has been on his table for over a month and a decision is now imminent.
Amidst this, AS is now reporting that Busquets has completely ruled out the possibility of moving to the MLS in the summer.
Earlier this year, a move to MLS looked very much likely for the 34-year-old midfielder, with Inter Miami appearing the most likely destination. Talks had even taken place with the franchise, partly owned by David Beckham, about a possible transfer.
However, fast forward to May and it is now being reported that Busquets is no longer considering a move to the MLS at this point.
It leaves the midfielder with just two options for his future – either to sign a contract with Barcelona or to move to Saudi Arabia, where he can expect a big paycheck.
Intriguingly, those appear to be the options that are left in front of Busquets’ close friend and former teammate Lionel Messi.
The Argentine is certain to leave PSG this summer and has Barcelona as a possible destination, along with Al-Hilal, who are willing to offer him an outrageous €400 million per year deal.
For weeks, it has been reported that Busquets’ next move could depend on Messi’s decision. Those rumours only gained weight after the Barcelona captain was spotted having dinner with Jordi Alba and Messi in Barça not so long ago.
It has been reported that there is a possibility that Messi wants to return to Barcelona for just a year before moving to Saudi Arabia, with Busquets and Alba following in his footsteps.
So, it remains to be seen how things progress on this front in the coming weeks as Busquets prepares himself to make an announcement regarding his future.
