Thomas Tuchel Critical Of Dayot Upamecano’s Performance Against Man City
Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has criticised French defender Dayot Upamecano (24) for his error-strewn display against Manchester City.
Upamecano enjoyed a great World Cup at the heart of France’s defence, but he was much less assured on Tuesday night during Bayern Munich’s 3-0 first-leg defeat against Manchester City in the quarter-final of the Champions League. The former Red Bull Leipzig centre-back was at fault for City’s second goal, losing the ball to Jack Grealish. He was then nowhere to be seen as Erling Haaland netted the third.
Post-match, Tuchel, who replace Julian Nagelsmann in March, didn’t defend the player. “[Upamecano] made a few too many errors. There were two are three situations where he lacked a bit of concentration and made risky decisions. That should never happen at this level, in this part of the pitch. He will learn from it,” the former Chelsea manager began, in an interview, transcribed by L’Équipe.
He continued, “We aren’t angry with him. He is still young and he will still make mistakes. But in a match at this level, you have to play without errors to achieve a result.”
Bayern Munich now have a mountain to climb if they want to progress to the semi-final stage of the competition. The second leg takes place at the Allianz Riviera next Wednesday.
