TOP 5 CHELSEA MANAGERS UNDER ROMAN ABRAMOVIC

A new set of statistics have surprisingly placed Avram Grant as the most successful manager in the Premier League during the Roman Abramovich era

Roman Abramovich’s reign as Chelsea’s owner has come to an end. The Russian Oligarch exits after a highly successful 19-year stay in London where the club won every available trophy to it.

Abramovich was well known for having little patience with the coaches he hired. 13 managers passed under the 55-year-old and with Todd Boehly set to lead a new consortium, we take a look at the top five managers under Abramovich in the Premier League.

Planet Football has ranked the Chelsea managers over the years using the Points Per Game (PPG) metric. It is important to note that the trophies won by the managers is not taken into consideration and thus, current fan favourite Thomas Tuchel misses out.

1. Avram Grant

A surprise name on top of the list. The Israeli manager was in charge of 33 Premier League games at Chelsea and won 67% of his matches. Despite his appointment being widely ridiculed by Chelsea fans, Grant finished his tenure without losing a single home game.

He was also in charge of Chelsea during their Champions League final loss against Manchester United in 2008.

2. Jose Mourinho

If the list had been arranged according to trophies won, Jose could have been higher on the list. ‘The Special One’ was in charge of Chelsea across two different spells. He took charge of 211 games getting a 66% win ratio in the Premier League.

  1. Antonio Conte

Another Premier League-winning coach. Conte led Chelsea to Premier League victory during his first season in charge in England. He oversaw a total of 76 games recording a 67% win rate in the process.

The Italian manager was however unceremoniously fired in 2018 after winning the FA Cup.

  1. Carlo Ancelotti

Now basking in his latest victory with Real Madrid, Ancelotti had a similarly successful spell with The Blues. Like Conte, he was the manager for two seasons and won the Premier League in 2010. He recorded a win rate of 63%.

5. Rafael Benitez

Benitez’s reign at Chelsea was highly unpopular given that he had managed their rivals, Liverpool. He was appointed as Roberto Di Matteo’s replacement in 2012. He led Chelsea to a third-place finish and won the Europa League but walked away from his post at the end of the season, paving way for the return of Jose Mourinho
