Toulouse Stun Holders To Lift Coupe De France After 66 YEARS
Toulouse cruised to victory in the Coupe de France final after a thumping 5-1 win over reigning champions Nantes on Saturday.
Fans supporting title holders Nantes made their presence known inside a rocking Stade de France but it was one-way traffic right from kick off for the opposition.
Toulouse took control when two thumping headers from Logan Costa (who has only featured in eight senior games this season) found the net after 10 minutes.
According to Opta data, no player has a quicker brace in a Coupe de France final as the 22-year-old centre-back in the 21st century.
Thijs Dallinga then secured a brace of his own for 4-0 by the 30-minute mark as Nantes were left stunned.
Coming out into the second half, the chance for the holders to retain their title became a mountain to climb and they needed to adjust their game plan.
However, the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Ludovic Blas and Mostafa Mohamed couldn’t figure out a way to inspire a comeback.
Toulouse continued to cut through Nantes throughout the remainder of the second half and their first-half demolition was eventually enough to lift the title.
A late Blas penalty softened the blow for the holders but Zakaria Aboukhlal piled on a fifth for the new champions.
It is the second time Toulouse have won the tournament (first against Angers in 1957 – 66 years ago).
Nantes, meanwhile, will need to shake the loss off quickly as the club is currently 16th in the Ligue 1 table and face relegation.
