VERSTAPPEN FIGHTS TO WIN AT CANADIAN GRAND PRIX, HAMILTON 3RD.
2021 world champion and current drivers’ championship leader Max Verstappen moved ahead with a well-earned victory in Montreal at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Dutchman was in control for much of the race with Carlos Sainz pushing late on, but the Spaniard could only finish second. Lewis Hamilton claimed third.
Max Verstappen extended his drivers’ championship lead with a win at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Verstappen led from the front at the start, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. sweeping past second-placed Fernando Alonso in the early stages.
The Dutchman suffered minor front wing damage but was not hampered as he continued to extend his lead, but Red Bull took a blow as Sergio Perez retired after just eight laps with more technical problems.
There was another premature exit for Haas, with Mick Schumacher sputtering to an end after 20 laps and yet again failing to score a point in Formula 1.
There was a little intrigue on lap 44 when Verstappen’s team appeared to misjudge a pitstop and he came out behind Lewis Hamilton with the Briton in second but his pace allowed him to move past without trouble.
Late in the race Sainz renewed his challenge of Verstappen but it was 2021’s champion who took victory while Hamilton claimed the final podium place, and teammate George Russell was fourth. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc battled to fifth after starting at the back of the grid.
