West Ham Striker Says David De Gea Has ‘Got To Do Better’
West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has weighed in on David de Gea’s recent howler for Manchester United.
The Red Devils took on the Irons last Sunday at the London Stadium. After a dominant start to the match from United, Said Benhrahma fired a shot towards De Gea that, to viewers, looked like it would be a fairly easy save.
However, the Spaniard failed to get a strong hand to the strike and instead watched the ball trickle into the back of the net to give West Ham the lead in the 27th minute. It was the only goal of the game, meaning United picked up a second consecutive loss and saw their grip on the top four loosen.
Fans have grown frustrated with De Gea’s form this season and many feel as though he is not fit to be the club’s No.1 anymore, however, he continues to have Erik ten Hag’s backing, and agreed terms for a new contract deal yesterday.
Antonio on De Gea
Reflecting on the incident, Antonio, who was involved in the Premier League clash, had his say on the 32-year-old after the woeful error.
Speaking on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, he said: “I can’t slate the man. I don’t really want to slate the man, but De Gea has got to do better. I don’t understand, he is such a good ‘keeper, but he has these moments.
“I feel so bad for the guy. He was up there as one of the best ‘keepers in the world, even though he is [still] up there, he still has these crazy moments. That goal, it was so slow. When I saw the shot I thought, ‘he is just going to collect this’.”
