Arsenal are reportedly one of three Premier League clubs to have opened talks with Barcelona over a move to sign Memphis Depay this summer. A player, Marc Overmars branded “fantastic” back in 2016.
Depay, 28, is struggling for game time at Barcelona – less than a year after completing a move to the Nou Camp from Lyon on a free transfer. The sacking of Ronald Koeman, replaced by Xavi, has affected his game time.
Super Deporte report that Arsenal are looking to take advantage. The Gunners have enquired over a move to raid Barcelona and sign the ex-Manchester United man – as have Everton and Newcastle United.
Speaking about Depay following his move to Manchester United in the summer of 2015, Overmars spoke to The Sun about Depay a year later. He said Depay was one of the best young talents in world football.
“United recruited someone with a fantastic record of improving talented
players. Then they signed two [Depay and Martial] of the best young talents in the world. Depay was fantastic last season in our league last season.”
OVERMARS ON DEPAY: ARSENAL REALLY NEED BARCELONA STRIKER
Alexander Isak, Dom Calvert-Lewin, Darwin Nunez and plenty more have been linked with a move to Arsenal. Mikel Arteta will be on the lookout for a forward – with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah set to leave.
Any of the aforementioned strikers is likely to cost north of £60million. But with Depay, given Barcelona need cash and Depay is 28, is likely to be a whole lot cheaper. It saves Arsenal cash, but gets them a proper striker.
