German journalist Florian Plettenberg, in his latest piece on Sky Germany, has offered an update on the future of Florian Wirtz.
Plettenberg suggests the Bayer Leverkusen starlet has become a hot prospect in the transfer market following his success in the Bundesliga. He could leave the Bay Arena as soon as 2024, putting a host of clubs on red alert.
Among the clubs interested in his services are FC Barcelona. The Catalans have been keeping a close eye on the youngster’s development in the Bundesliga, with the objective to make a move in the near future.
As per Plettenberg, FC Barcelona have recently made their first step in their bid to sign Wirtz. They have contacted his father/agent to enquire about the possibility of a potential move to Camp Nou.
Barça’s interest in Wirtz is not surprising as the youngster is rated one of Germany’s finest creative talents. At the age of just 19, he has racked up almost 100 competitive appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 21 goals and registering 28 assists.
Wirtz has four caps for the German international team as well, even in the midst of his struggles with injuries.
This has created a solid impression on Barcelona, who are prepared to make a move for Wirtz in the near future. Although the German is not expected to leave Leverkusen in the coming summer, it only plays into the hands of Barça, who are set to face major economic hurdles.
A move in 2024, therefore, would make much more sense, from the Catalans’ perspective. However, it must be noted that the club may face stiff competition from Bayern Munich while their arch-rivals Real Madrid are also interested in the services of this highly talented playmaker.
