Barcelona have struck a deal with Inigo Martinez, promising to sign the defender if all conditions are met, reports Gerard Romero.
The Spanish club had previously been interested in Martinez last summer but was unable to secure his services due to his contractual obligation at Athletic Club. However, with the 31-year-old’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Barcelona have promised to make a move for him.
The promise from Barcelona played a crucial role in convincing Martinez to stay put and not extend his contract at Athletic Club. However, at the age of 31, the defender himself may be seeking a new challenge elsewhere.
Martinez’s potential move to Barcelona is set against the backdrop of Gerard Pique’s retirement last year and Eric Garcia’s lack of game time. Garcia has fallen behind players like Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo, and Jules Kounde in the pecking order, and he has been linked with a potential exit at the end of the season.
Martinez is a talented defender with a wealth of experience, having played for both Real Sociedad and Athletic Club. He has also earned 37 caps for the Spanish national team. His ability to play out from the back, combined with his strong defensive skills, could make him an excellent addition to Barcelona’s squad.
However, Barcelona’s pursuit of the veteran centre-back is not guaranteed, as it will depend on the club’s financial situation.
The Spanish club will first need to sign their priority targets such as a right-back or a midfielder before considering a move for a centre-back. But should they plan to buy a defender, Inigo should top the list, ahead of other targets such as Aymeric Laporte.
Given his experience and leadership, the Spaniard’s addition to the club could give Barça some much-needed depth in central defence.
