Even though the summer transfer window is still some way away, FC Barcelona are already sketching out plans to rejig their squad before next season.
And, as per reports, they are planning to bring in a left-footed centre-half in the summer. And one of the options on the agenda at Camp Nou offices is Athletic Club’s Inigo Martinez.
The 31-year-old has been on Barcelona’s radar since last summer and the possibility of signing him for a low fee was studied back then. But the move did not materialise, although the Blaugrana have maintained their interest in the Spaniard.
And, SPORT reports that Barcelona continue to be interested in signing Martinez in the summer transfer window, when his contract with Athletic Club expires. However, they have some concerns regarding the defender’s injury and fitness issues.
Martinez started the 2022/23 season strongly for the Basque outfit, but a serious injury in November has kept him out of action till now.
The Spanish international has recently resumed training but it is still uncertain as to when he can make an on-field return with Los Leones.
Barcelona see Martinez as a valuable addition due to his ability on the ball, and experience and they believe he can handle the pressure of playing for a team of their stature.
But his recent injury has raised some concern within the Catalan club’s camp, although it does not mean that they are set to abandon their pursuit of the 31-year-old.
Instead, Barça hope to see Martinez back in action soon so that they can go ahead with the operation to sign him.
Athletic Club, for their part, maintain that they want to keep hold of their experienced star, but are yet to make a firm contract offer for him.
Martinez is attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, as well as clubs in England and Italy. But, if he were to leave San Mames this summer, the defender wants to join only Barcelona.
