Barcelona Tell Defender He Is ‘Non-Transferable’, Will Start Contract Talks Next Year
With Barcelona facing an iffy situation due to their Financial Fair Play issues, a number of players could be allowed to leave in the summer transfer window to lower the wage bill and generate income.
At the same time, though, there are some stars who are considered ‘untouchable’ for whom no offers will be entertained.
And, according to SPORT, last summer’s signing Andreas Christensen belongs to the latter category, with Barcelona already communicating to his camp that he is considered ‘non-transferable’.
In fact, the La Liga leaders wish to hand a new contract to the Danish international and will start talks over the same next year.
Christensen signed for Barça from Chelsea, arriving for free. The 27-year-old has had a couple of fitness problems but has performed admirably when fit and available, forming a formidable partnership with Ronald Araujo.
The Denmark international’s performances had led to interest from clubs in the Premier League, where Newcastle United were said to be keen.
More recently, Aston Villa were also being linked as Mateu Alemany, who is set to leave Barcelona for the Premier League outfit, wanted to take Christensen along with him.
However, the Catalan heavyweights have made it clear that the former Chelsea ace is not for sale this summer, even though his departure would provide the club with a big financial boost.
Christensen signed a four-year contract until 2026 when he joined Barcelona for free last year. The defender is said to be happy and well-settled at the club and the Blaugrana too are very pleased with how the transfer has worked out.
Given his age and performances, the Catalans want to reward the Dane with a new contract, and plan to start talks on a renewal next year, once their FFP situation is a bit more relaxed.
