Brighton 1-0 Man United: Brighton Strike Late To Win Over United
Brighton struck at the death to defeat Manchester United 1-0 at the Amex Stadium. It leaves Brighton’s European dreams well and truly alive and gives hope to Liverpool of beating United to a top four berth and Champions League football.
Both sides spurned great chances inside the first five minutes, Antony and Kaoru Mitoma missing when it seemed easier to score.
Mitoma was Brighton’s main dangerman in the opening periods, getting the better of Aaron Wan-Bissaka down the left-hand side.
United’s main threat came from Marus Rashford, with Bruno Fernandes looking to play him in over the top of the Brighton defence on a number of occasions.
Anthony Martial fired straight at Brighton keeper Robert Sánchez after some neat interplay between himself and Fred. The French striker would have been better off choosing precision over power.
A very lively first half came to a close with both sides unable to find that crucial first goal.
Brighton started the second 45 the brighter side with United’s slack passing leading to another chance for Mitoma.
Ex-United man Danny Welbeck blazed over from just outside the box as the Seagulls increased the pressure.
Tempers flared in the 68th minute after Antony reacted to not getting a free kick by scything down Alexis Mac Allister and then squaring up to Lewis Dunk. Both the Brazilian and the Brighton skipper were booked as a result, joining Casemiro and Diogo Dalot in the ref’s book.
Brighton were the side on top with less than 10 to go but United remained a danger on the counter.
David de Gea came to United’s rescue in the 90th minute, putting Mac Allister’s fierce 20-yard drive wide with the tip of his fingers.
Mac Allister finally got his goal from the spot in the ninth minute of injury time after Luke Shaw handballed from a corner.
It was near enough the last kick of the game and gave Roberto De Zerbi’s men a deserved win.
